Dear Comrades,

The Lebanese Communist Party (LCP), has the honor to convey to you its sincere greetings on the two historical occasions you are celebrating; the 80th year of the foundation of the CPG, and the 150 years of the Communist Manifesto.

We value very highly your unrelentless efforts towards achieving a better understanding of the present challenges that are facing the communist parties, in addition to other progressive and democrative forces, in our region and the world at large. The aim of defining the role of these forces in confronting these challenges, under the current conditions, is of great importance. We do believe that the international conference you are organizing on «The Communist Parties under Current Conditions», will be a valuable contribution towards this end.

Dear Comrades,
Due, mainly to our involvement, at present, in the preparation for the convention of our Party’s 8th National Congress, which will be held during the coming summer, we express our deep regret for not being able to attend this conference, and to participate with you in celebrating these two very important and dear occasions.
Please accept our apology for any inconvenience our delayed answer might have caused.
Long live the fraternal relation between our two peoples, and among our two parties.
Long live the Communist Party of Greece.

Message of greetings to the CPG on its 80 years of foundation

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Communist of Greece, the National Council of the Communist Party of India sends warm fraternal greetings to the leadership and to all members of the Communist Party of Greece.

The Communist Party of India highly values the important role played by CPG since its foundation. For 80 years the CPG has been waging consistent struggles, under complex and difficult conditions, for the national and democratic rights of the Greek people, for socialist ideals. The CPG’s participation in the Communist International contributed greatly to create a common strategy against imperialism and reaction. Thereafter, it continued to play a significant role in the International Communist movement, thus considerably enhancing its prestige, and furthering the common cause against imperialism.

We recall the revolutionary contribution of the CPG and all Greek communists in the struggle against every manifestation of fascism and narrow nationalism. Greek communists added a glorious page in history during their armed resistance the fascist occupation forces. The CPG withstood all persecutions and atrocities, and remained loyal to Marxism-Leninism.

The Communist Party of India is aware of the initiatives of your party at the national level in defense of the rights of all sections of society as well as mobilizing public opinion and common actions against imperialists conspiracies in the Balkans, the Mediterranean and the Middle East along with the progressive forces of those countries. In this respect our party fully supports the principled position taken by the 15th Congress of your Party.
We look forward to further successes of the CPG in the coming years.

With fraternal greetings,
National Council
Communist Party of India

Greetings from the Union of Communist Parties CPSU

Dear comrades,

The Council of the UCP-CPSU extends their warm congratulations to all the members of your Party and the working people of your country on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the glorious CPG.

Your Party came into being exactly one year after the Great October Socialist Revolution and all through its history, it has walked side by side with Great October. Skillfully leading the heroic struggle of the working class and all working people of Greece, it withstood all the great disturbances to the international communist and workers' movement that have taken place in recent decades.

More than half a century after its foundation, the CPG suffered very harsh persecutions and was obliged to operate under conditions of illegality or semi-illegality. Nevertheless, as early as 1934, it put forward the program for a democratic revolution with the prospect of evolving into a socialist revolution.

During World War II and the fascist Occupation of Greece, the CPG fought as the main organizer and leader of the Greek people's resistance against the Occupation forces. On its initiative and with the participation of other parties, the resistance movements EAM and ELAS were established. Toward the end of the war, the party numbered some 400,000 members.

After the war, as a result of armed intervention by British and US imperialism, and of the civil war that was precipitated by the "interventionaries" in conjunction with domestic reaction, the popular democratic movement and its armed forces suffered a temporary defeat.

However, during the 1950s and 60s there was a new upsurge in the mass popular movement, expressed by the united democratic left party under the leadership of the CPG.

The struggle of the broad masses of the working people under communist leadership led to the overthrow of the fascist dictatorship of the "black colonels" and later to the abolition of the monarchy.

Today the CPG, the militant vanguard of the working people of Greece, is fighting for a new road to development for Greek society, for the creation of a strong, socio-political union of left forces ready to fight to win power in the interests of the working people.

All these decades, Soviet communists have been watching your difficult struggle with feelings of fraternal solidarity, offering multilateral support.

The Union of Communist Parties of the CPSU has noted with great satisfaction the ever stronger bonds growing between Soviet and Greek communists.

Today, on the 80th anniversary of the foundation of the CPG, we would like to convey our wholehearted best wishes to Greek communists and to all the working people of your country for new victories and inspirations in the struggle against the yoke of national and foreign capital, for a better, happy life, for socialism.

Let us further strengthen the friendship and cooperation between Soviet and Greek communists, and between the peoples of our two countries.

With communist greetings,

Oleg Senin
President of the Council of the Union of Communist Parties CPSU

Dear comrades,

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation congratulates the fraternal Communist Party of Greece on the 80th anniversary of its founding.

Created on the wave of the October Revolution, your party went through difficult ordeals in the struggle for your country’s independence. The communists of Russia are well aware of the contribution of the Greek Communists to the common battle against fascism in the years of WWII. We all express our admiration for the heroism of the communists of Greece, which showed itself again in the difficult and tragic years of the military junta. But no one could break their militant spirit and faith in our common ideals.

Today you are in the front lines of those who are struggling for real democracy, for the vital interests of the broad masses of the people.

We deeply appreciate the great contribution of the Greek communists to the international communist movement of which the CPG has always been a militant part.

The CPRF, in expressing its firm solidarity with the CPG, wishes Greek communists new successes in their actions, which are full of self sacrifice, for the good of the Greek people and for the victory of the ideals of socialism.

We express our readiness once again to develop and strengthen the old bonds of friendship between the CPRF and the CPG in the common struggle.

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Chile

Dear comrades,

It was our intention, as you know from our previous correspondence, to send a delegate to take part in the activities organised by the Communist Party of Greece to celebrate the 80th anniversary of its founding and the 150 years since the Manifesto of the Communist Party was first published. However, financial problems which are insurmountable at this time, have prevented us from being with you.

However, in the name of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Chile and the members of our Party, we are sending you fraternal greetings and reconfirming our long-standing friendship which is reflected in active mutual relations and exchanges of views and information.

The CPG and the CPC, living their national reality, have always been in the front ranks, leading the peoples of their countries in the struggle for social change, promoting alliances with the Left forces, and with the social movement of the working people and the people as a whole, to win genuine democracy and social justice. Both of our parties have succeeded in winning major victories in our fight for these goals, but we have also suffered periods of setbacks. Both of our parties have fought in recent decades against various forms of fascism, violent dictatorships, and frenzied militarism; and we are fighting today against neo-liberalism which spawns extreme polarisation to the detriment of the majority of the people, where exploitation, unemployment, poverty and hunger wreak havoc, while at the same time outrageous prosperity is being created for a very small minority.

We greatly appreciate the internationalism that permeates the activity of the CPG and is expressed in its permanent engagement in the struggles and problems of its region and of the whole world.

Through you we would also like to greet the delegations of the communist, democratic and progressive parties who are in Athens, and with whom we are interested in maintaining our relations.

At your meeting, reference will undoubtedly be made to the significant victory won these days by the people of Indonesia, who imposed a first defeat on the tyranny of Suharto, who consolidated his dictatorship by a slaughter that is among the most violent this century has known. The fall of Suharto also constitutes a serious adversity for neoliberalism. We feel it is our duty to offer solidarity with this and the other struggles that are opening the road to increased activity at various points on the planet and ruining the dreams of those who consider that history is over and that capitalism is being perpetuated.

We Chilean communists continue to fight for democratic rule. The Pinochet dictatorship, after its agreed withdrawal, left behind a legacy that the Christian democrat governments and the political parties which support them lack the will to eliminate. The military has succeeded in imposing its tutelage, hindering constitutional and legislative reforms to democratise the country. Pinochet, despite the outcry of the people, was accepted as a lifetime senator. Our party filed a law suit against the tyrant accusing him of genocide and murder. Our Party, which is meeting resistance to its entering Parliament, has managed to promote the mobilisations of the masses, supporting the just demands of the population. There are many results that show the increase of our influence among the working people, students and social organisations, while we are going through a complex situation.

This year our Party will hold its 21st National Congress and will provide you with the relevant information about it in the near future. We are also preparing to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the military coup in homage to the memory of Salvador Alliente, our martyred president, and all those who sacrificed their lives to make Chile more democratic, with greater social justice, and with the prospect of socialism. In today’s struggles, in the conditions that emerged from our reality, this experience will be taken into account in achieving new goals.

With fraternal greetings.
Gladys Marin Millie
General Secretary of the Communist Party of Chile

Union of Communists of Poland
«PROLETARIAT»

We address cordial greetings to all those participating in the International Meeting of Communist and Workers’ Parties which is being held in Athens on 22-24 May 1998 and wish you success in your work.

Unfortunately we will not be able to send our delegates to this event because of our limited financial resources. We recently held our 2nd National Conference of the «Proletariat» Union of Communists of Poland. The Conference absorbed most of our financial resources which is why we are unable to send delegates to Athens.

Nevertheless, so that our opinion is also heard regarding the further development and rallying of the communist and workers’ movement at the Meeting organised by the CP of Greece, we are sending you our views of the action of communist and workers’ parties in the world.

This will be our modest contribution to the cause of the growth and action of Marxist-Leninist parties.
