Authorities investigate prison information leak

Horrific Crime at Abu Ghraib Prison: 17 Detainees Die after Forcible «Blood Donation»

The authorities of Abu Ghraib Prison physically liquidated 17 detainees in mid November 1998 after forcing them to «donate» blood.
Our Party sources reported that the victims were among 160 detainees at this notorious prison who had blood forcibly drawn from them on 15 November, thus further weakening their already emaciated bodies and leading to their death in the following days. Ambulances removed the bodies of victims to al-Madain district and they were buried at a cemetery there. The whole operation was carried out under close supervision by units of Special Security (al-Amn al-Khas).

The victims were:

Mehdi Hussein Nayef, Abdul Hamid Hadi Alaa, Kadhem Abdul Salam Mawlood (from Basra)
Wadi Abbass Mehdi, Hilal Naji Salman (from Diwaniyyah)
Makki Hassan Hilal, Hayder Najefi Kadhem, Abdullah Abbass Mutradha (from Umarah).
Abdullah Mohammed Hadi, Abdul Rahman Shallal Yassin, Khales Awad Hussein, Salman abdul Wahhab Hussein (from Nasseriyyah).
Abbas Moslem Nayef (from Samawah).
Yassin Obaid Mohsen, Hussein Faleh Hussein (from Kerbala).
Abbass Asem Akram, Mehdi Hussein Ali (from Najaf).
Our sources have also reported that on 23 November, Abu Ghraib Prison authorities have transferred 11 citizens who have been on the death row for years, to the execution wing to await orders to carry out the death sentences.

These detainees, almost half of whom come from the town of Samawah, had been sentenced under Paragraph 1 of Article 95, after being charged with participation in the March 1991 popular uprising against the dictatorial regime.

The names of these detainees who face imminent execution are:

Fadhel Mehdi Atheer, Meshaal abdul Wahhab Hussein, Jawad Abdass Asem, Leith abdul Hadi Flayyeh, Ugab Yassin Shaour (from Samawah).
Rifaat Hadi Suleiman, Nawzad Rashid Qader (from Kirkuk).
Ali Hussein Fath-ullah (from Arbil).
Kadhem Muhsen Jawad, Abdul Hameed Nateq Hussein, Hasan Ali Hassan (from Umarah).

Meanwhile, in what seems to be a reaction to the efforts of the Iraqi Communist Party and its Office of Human Rights, as well as other opposition forces, to expose the crimes of mass executions in the regime’s prisons and horrific conditions suffered by the detainees, an investigation committee arrived at Abu Ghraib Prison last September, charged with task of revealing the identity of those responsible for information leaks from the prison.

The investigation team included Sabah al-Douri, Special Security representative; Colonel Husham Nayef al-Tikriti, and a third person whose identity was not known. They interrogated a large number of employees in the prison administration and departments, as well as prison guards.

Afterwards, on 8 October, first lieutenant (prison warden) Fahad Ayed Adel, first lieutenant Reyadh Mehdi Sagban al-Duleii, first lieutenant Majeed Mahoud Wahed al-Sameraai and major Sultan Jassem Awad al-Jubouri were arrested. On 12 November 1998, orders were received for the transfer of Major Hassan Allawi, who was in charge of detention wards, to Mosul Prison. He was replaced by major (prison warden) Faysal Awad Hmoud al-Hiti. The official in charge of the prison big wards (his name is unknown) was transferred to al-Reyadh Prison in Haweeja, and was replaced by major (prison warden) abdul Wahhab Khazaal Madhi al-Tikriti (from Special Security). The official in charge of underground dungeons, major Nasser Madloul Abbass al-Basri, was transferred to Basrah Prison, and replaced by major Hamadan Khuwealid Husham al-Douri.
