STATEMENT ON THE US AND GREAT BRITAIN ATTACK TO IRAQ

The European Unified Left in the Council of Europe strongly condemns the military attack of the United States and the Great Britain to Iraq. The military attack does not help in any way in abolishing weapons of mass destruction which has been the ultimate goal of the UN Security Council; on the contrary.

The Security Council of the United Nations has not given to the governments of the US and the UK a mandate to operate as a world police. The attack has taken place without the mandate from the side of the Security Council and thus violates the basic principles of the UN organisation.

The military attack shows that the US leadership with its allies tries to use the international situation for its own benefit. This can mean the undermining of the collective security system based on the work of the UN Security Council. At the same time the attack endangers the very existence of the whole UN system.

The European Unified Left demands the immediate beginning of the constructive talks with the Iraq leadership.
